WELCOME!
I'm Bill Phelps and I'll be teaching Audio-Video Technology & Film Levels 1,2 & Broadcast Video Production Applications (HoyaVision) this semester. I love what I do and believe I have finally figured out what I want to be when I grow up - and this is it! (Just in time) My wish for everyone (parents included) out there is for you to find what you're meant to do, because there is nothing better than to get to do what you love everyday. I'm truly blessed in that I get to share it with others as a teacher.
GOALS
We have a number of goals for the program. In addition to helping you make better videos, we're going to work on:
1. Becoming College & Career Ready - you'll be treated as responsible young adults and you'll be expected to deliver as a young adult. I hope to introduce you to what it's like in the college classroom and in the workforce so you'll be ready and prepared to succeed. Past students have come back and shared that they were more prepared because of this class than any other. The biggest challenge for most students is learning to manage their time and getting the work done. 2. Improve Communication Skills: This is one of the top two issues employers have with new hires (from high school and college). You're smart, but you struggle properly communicating your intelligence with adults. We'll work on that. 3. Improving Problem Solving Skills: This is the other top issue employers struggle with from new hires. Sadly we adults either solve the problem for you or give you a list of 4 options to choose from. You need to figure things out on your own. The better you get at trying different solutions without choices or someone coming to your rescue, the better you will be for yourself and your future employer. There will be plenty of opportunities for you in my class to practice this and I hope you get the chance to practice it at home too. We have others, but these are the top ones and we're going to have fun working on them. ALL
This week we'll be working through the administrative parts of the program. It's also a great time to develop your Administrative Workflow to handle the weekly assignments so as not to let assignments slip through the cracks. ALL former students have stated how important it is to get the work done and not procrastinate.
Areas we'll cover are: 1. My rules ("5 R's" and class rules) 2. Class Notebooks 3. Safety Rules 4. Emergency Procedures We'll also go over some of the new opportunities for our program and for those interested in taking their skills outside of the class assignments. We will be using Office365 Class Notebook this year. Be sure to review the brief HOW TO: AVTF CLASS NOTEBOOK video on how to access your electronic notebook. EVERYONE will need to have our own Class 10 SD card. 8 GB will suffice, but you may want a 16 GB card to make sure you have enough room. The Hole In The Wall has them in stock AND at a great price. PLEASE - I beg you, DO NOT buy them from a Walgreens, Rite-Aid, CVS or similar, non-computer store. They will double even quadruple the price.
One of our first assignments for everyone will be to complete this contact info form:
HOYAVISION - HSPN - HARRISON TODAY
We have some work ahead of us as we change our look - literally, with a new studio set which we need to assemble, and smaller crews. We'll all need to be trained in video story telling, including the talent. We also will be establishing some new workflows to ensure we have what we need to fulfill the school's desire to have an updated promotional video.
We will be operating with two main crews, Blue and Green, and a combined HSPN crew. Both crews will alternate to produce a Monday HARRISON TODAY episode, detailing the news in and around Harrison HS. They'll also alternate the standard weekly HoyaVision episode highlighting someone inside of Harrison, something or someone outside of Harrison, an Academic area and a Fine Arts area. HSPN will cover all Fall Sports. The crews' broadcast schedule for the semester will be determined this week. Our technical crews will also get at least 10 different angles of iconic Harrison locations for :30 seconds each to develop a library of b-roll. They'll also work on getting at least 1:00 of ambient audio of different activities that can be used as an a Harrison Audio Library. These can be shared among the crews. AVTF-1
This week, in addition to the procedural and administrative items, we'll be looking at using our smartphones as cameras and framing shots. Be sure to bring your charging cables to transfer the footage/shots.
AVTF-2
This week we'll refresh our Photoshop skills and re-acquaint ourselves with Premiere. We will use an Adobe Tutorial to guide us through the basics of Photoshop and graphic design project.
BROADCAST OPPORTUNITIES
Even though we haven't even met as a crew yet, it is time to get applications in for the Spring Semester's HoyaVision, HARRISON TODAY, and HSPN. You can find the link to the application in the upper portion of the right column. Applications are due by August 25th and interviews starting the week of August 28th.
More immediate - we are looking for a regular crew for a multi-camera, live stream broadcast for the home Varsity Volleyball matches. We need 3 camera operators, TD, Director, and 2 commentators. See me if you are interested. Games start August 17th.
