CONGRATS TO HARRISON SKILLSUSAHarrison SkillsUSA Chapter participated in the SkillsUSA Georgia State Leadership & Skills Conference for the first time last week. Harrison Chapter Co-President, Anna Mullins and member Becky Koon entered the Digital Cinematography contest and spent the week before the event planning, filming and presenting their short movie. When not presenting their project, they had a lot of fun checking out the displays, presentations, activities, and network with video/film presenters. Huge thanks to Mr. Ward and his Graphics Club for joining the Harrison SkillsUSA Chapter. Their membership and support was instrumental in our Chapter being recognized for the largest percentage increase in membership. EVERYONEOne more week! We can do this. Let's make sure we continue to "Earn the A"! Please be sure to turn in your complete Journal Entry into your Class Notebook and Show Comments on my blog. Re: Show Comments, I've noticed less than cordial (polite) comments. The purpose of this exercise is to develop professionalism when commenting on others' work. You don't need to like the work, no program will appeal to everyone, but you do need to be professional when sharing your opinions. PORTFOLIO WEBSITES: Please be sure to continue working on your Portfolio Websites. This is a Summative Assessment, weighted 35%, of your final grade. You should continue to build your reel with your best work. Here's the link to the requirements: PROFESSIONAL PORTFOLIO WEBSITE It's also in the right side bar towards the bottom of the column. HARRISON TODAY - HSPN - HoyaVisionI want to share how pleased and proud I am of our broadcast teams! Thursday and Friday I was able to share the broadcasts with a number of teachers and professionals from around the state. While there is always ways to improve, they were impressed with how the shows went on - LIVE - without my being there. They were amazed at how resourceful you were when technical issues arose and how you adapted - on your own - during the broadcast to address them. THAT is what employers in any field are looking for. INDIVIDUAL SEGMENTS: Many of you have been curious about the purpose of the assignment - to produce (plan, film, & edit) a :60 - :90 second segment - by yourself. The key goals are: 1. The broadcast industry is quickly transitioning to a multi-platform journalist where reporters/anchors are expected to be able to film, edit and present the stories. Our standards for this course are based on emulating the industry practices. 2. In order to improve our video storytelling, we need to understand all aspects of the story we're telling. The questions/conversation had with subjects of the story and the video to support the story. 2a. It's important for the Talent to understand what shots to get, how to get them and how to cut them up, select and put them in a sequence to better tell the story. 2b. It's also important for the technical crew members to know the story equally as well as the talent. What are you trying to say with your segment? Who is best to tell the story, and it's NOT the reporter/videog. What questions can you ask to get the subject(s) to tell the story? We'll be working with the Talent on Monday through Wednesday on camera/edit basics and the technical crew Tuesday through Thursday on questioning/interviewing techniques. These segments, and your efforts in producing them will be graded as a test grade and be aired. Producers and Directors, in addition to producing segments of their own, will need to schedule everyone's segments into a show through the remainder of the semester. SHOW COMMENTS: Please continue to watch other schools' shows and comment on them. REPLY TO COMMENT: Please take a quick moment to reply to a comment about your show. ADVISORY BOARD BENEFITSWe've been lucky to have an active and supportive Advisory Committee that helps keep our program relevant with a variety of fields out there. They have visited us, facilitated shadow days, worked with us, reviewed portfolios, provided guidance on broadcasts and curriculum. Another example of this support came from Ms. Kris Burnett, former CNN producer now Media Producer for Hospitality Upgrade magazine. Ms. Burnett worked with some AVTF students as director for a multi-cam switched event this past weekend. We learned a ton, from proper preparation before a production, suggested switching techniques, industry vocab, how a director calmly directs a crew (something I aspire to get better at), etc. We'll be hosting Ms. Burnett in the near future.
