WELCOME!
Welcome everyone! I hope you enjoyed your summer. Mine was more productive than relaxing, but I still had a great time. Since the first week is only two days, a nice way to transition back into school, I've combined the blog posts.
GOALS
We have a number of goals for the program. In addition to helping you make better videos, we're going to work on:
1. Becoming College & Career Ready - you'll be treated as responsible young adults and you'll be expected to deliver as a young adult. I hope to introduce you to what it's like in the college classroom and in the workforce so you'll be ready and prepared to succeed. Past students have come back and shared that they were more prepared because of this class than any other. The biggest challenge for most students is learning to manage their time and getting the work done. 2. Improve Communication Skills: This is one of the top two issues employers have with new hires (from high school and college). You're smart, but you struggle properly communicating your intelligence with adults. We'll work on that. 3. Improving Problem Solving Skills: This is the other top issue employers struggle with from new hires. Sadly we adults either solve the problem for you or give you a list of 4 options to choose from. You need to figure things out on your own. The better you get at trying different solutions without choices or someone coming to your rescue, the better you will be for yourself and your future employer. There will be plenty of opportunities for you in my class to practice this and I hope you get the chance to practice it at home too. We have others, but these are the top ones and we're going to have fun working on them. EVERYONE
This week we'll be working through the administrative parts of the program. It's also a great time to develop your Administrative Workflow to handle the weekly assignments so as not to let assignments slip through the cracks. ALL former students have stated how important it is to get the work done and not procrastinate.
Areas we'll cover are: 1. My rules ("5 R's" and class rules) 2. Class Notebooks 3. Safety Rules 4. Emergency Procedures We'll also go over some of the new opportunities for our program and for those interested in taking their skills outside of the class assignments. We will be using Office365 Class Notebook this year. I'll post a brief HOW TO: AVTF CLASS NOTEBOOK video on how to access your electronic notebook once they're set up. EVERYONE will need to have our own Class 10 SD card. 8 GB will suffice, but you may want a 16 GB card to make sure you have enough room. The Hole In The Wall has them in stock AND at a great price. PLEASE - I beg you, DO NOT buy them from a Walgreens, Rite-Aid, CVS or similar, non-computer store. They will double even quadruple the price. NOTE: HOYAVISION-HSPN, AVTF-2, AVTF-3: I highly recommend purchasing class 10 cards that are 80 MB/s. The 40 MB/s aren't fast enough for the DSLR's.
EVERYONE will need to have their own SD card - labelled - by Monday, 8/5/19. We need them to use the cameras.
NOTE: HOYAVISION-HSPN, AVTF-2, AVTF-3 - Be sure to get Class 10 cards with 80 MB/s speed. The 40 MB/s cards aren't fast enough for the DSLR's. OTHER REQUIRED SUPPLIES: In addition to the SD cards, EVERY AVTF & HoyaVision/HSPN student must have: 1. Something to write with and write on 2. Headphones/Earbuds with a 1/8" (3.5mm) connector or adapter to that connector.
As mentioned above in the GOALS section, communication is key to our success. To help me do that, I will need you to complete the following form by this Friday, 8/2/19
HOYAVISION - HSPN
Through next Friday, 8/9/19, we'll be working on getting to know our teams, reviewing what's needed to produce a good segment and a good show, and establishing our workflow. Our Mission is to celebrate and share the stories and successes of Harrison High School and the Harrison community.
Our HoyaVision Producers & Directors took some time towards the end of the summer to meet with their counterparts at WSB-TV and watch a People 2 People episode being recorded. In addition to learning how the pro's do it, they've helped establish a great working relationship with Cox Media Group. The AJC will help us with our Hoya Headline News (online Harrison News), WSB Radio will help guide us to produce Harrison Podcasts (see me if you're interested in this venture), and WSB-TV will help provide feedback and guidance on our broadcasts.
avtf-2 period 2
This semester we'll be taking the skills we learned in AVTF-1 to the next level and adding some additional skills and tools to help us tell better stories and produce better videos. Our first focus will be to learn how to properly work the Canon XA-10 cameras and refresh our memories how to use Adobe Premiere Pro. Please make sure you have the required materials by Monday, 8/5/19.
AVTF-1 PERIODS 3 & 4
Welcome to the wonderful world of video! In this class we'll focus (bad pun) on learning how to make videos that aren't painful to watch, we've all seen those, tell a good story, and look good. We'll learn how to use a variety of tools to help us do that and have some fun along the way! While doing so, we'll also be developing the skills that you'll need to succeed in the "outside" world, be it college or career.
But first, I need to know who you are. Your first assignment, due Monday, 8/05/19, will be to create a selfie-video on your smartphone answering the following questIons: •On your smart-phone, you ALONE, record your answers to the following: •NAME and how you spell it •WHAT YEAR WILL YOU GRADUATE HIGH SCHOOL? •WHAT DO YOU DO OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL? (hobbies, sports, job, just chill, etc.) •WHY DID YOU TAKE THIS COURSE? (please be honest: “Mr. Phelps, I want to make better YouTube videos.” “I want to go into broadcasting/movies” “It was my last choice and I’m here.”) •WHAT SHOULD I KNOW ABOUT YOU AS YOUR TEACHER? (I’m a talker. I’m a poor test taker. I’m lazy. Etc.) Please be honest. The more I understand and know you as a student, the better we can work together to help you succeed. These will NOT be shared with anyone. This is between you and me. It is due Monday, 8/05/19. I'll start reviewing them, individually, during class starting on Monday. NOTE: THIS IS A GRADED ASSIGNMENT - EASY 100. GET IT DONE ON TIME!
